St. Catherine’s Middle School Curriculum
Sixth and Seventh Grade: World Geography is complemented by an arts program with a strong skills program to ensure students learn the essential elements and themes of world geography and culture. Sixth Grade, Western Hemisphere. Seventh Grade, Eastern Hemisphere.
Eighth Grade: United States History: Beginnings to 1877. This course will provide students with the tools to create an understanding of America’s past and its impact on our lives today.
Sixth Grade: Students will learn the Elements of Literature through reading novels, non-fiction, short stories, and poetry. Students will connect literature to World Geography studies. Literature circles will be used. Students will develop compositional style using standardized English, improving sentence structure, creating organized paragraphs and Narrative and Cause and Effect essays. Some research will be done
Seventh Grade: Students will apply Elements of Literature to connect to themes of World Geography. Literature circles will be used. Students will continue to develop personal writing style through prose and creative writing assignments leading to Informational writing, Speech, and Comparison/Contrast assignments. Further research strategies will be learned.
Eighth Grade: Students will analyze the Elements of Literature including samples of Shakespeare and Homer, novels, short stories and poetry. Non-fiction will be key reading for students as they learn the entire process of writing a fully documented research paper. There will also be a significant creative writing assignment.
The Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade courses include an integrated study of Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. All three courses focus on making science a hands-on experience with labs and activities that engage students in practicing the steps of the scientific method. Several reading strategies are included to help students understand and organize information covered and to connect their science experience with other subjects, especially math, in improving their appreciation of the world around them.
Sixth Grade: This course focuses on developing an understanding of and fluency with multiplication and division of fractions and decimals, and connecting them with a wide variety of problems involving ratios and rates. Students experience algebra by writing, interpreting, evaluating, and using mathematical expressions and equations.
Seventh Grade: In this course students extend their work with ratios by developing an understanding of and applying proportionality to solve a wide variety of percent problems, including similarity. Students also use formulas to determine surface areas and volumes of three-dimensional shapes. They use algebraic operations on all rational numbers and solve linear equations.
Algebra: This course presents a study of the real numbers and their properties. These properties are then used to solve equations (both linear and non-linear) and inequalities. Problem solving is also stressed through which algebraic processes are used. Recommended: Ease in ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
Sixth Grade: This course begins with the creation story and follows the Old Testament in chronological order. Through prayer, scripture, discussion, and reflection, students learn about God’s love for his people, and his action in their lives throughout history by explore the forming, building, redefining, and fulfilling of the covenant God made with his people. Additional focus is given to studying the components of Church’s liturgical year.
Seventh Grade: This course centers on Jesus’ life, his teachings, and the sacraments he instituted. It presents Jesus’ call to each person to become his disciple. Through prayer, scripture, discussion, and reflection, students explore ways in which Jesus’ ways nurture people to discipleship. Students become familiar with the themes of Catholic Church’s social teaching.
Eighth Grade: This course presents the Church from its beginning at Pentecost and through its history with an emphasis on social teachings. Through prayer, scripture, discussion, and reflection, students gain knowledge of the teachings and Tradition of the Catholic Church. They explore the mission of the Church entrusted to them by Jesus. Students discover that as baptized members of this Church, they have certain moral responsibilities.
Intro to Modern Language: For Sixth and Seventh Graders, this course is an introduction to the Chinese and Spanish languages and culture.
Art provides students with a basic overview of art emphasizing expression of creative ideas and appreciation of art. This exploratory class will introduce students to a wide variety of materials, techniques, attitudes and ideas.
Band provides an opportunity for those students with instrumental music ability to play various types of music. The band also provides formal and incidental music for school and school-sponsored functions.
Students learn fundamental vocal technique and music reading skills. Choral literature studied includes unison and two-part music.
The Physical Education Department program provides each student opportunities to develop skill and understanding in a variety of youth related activities in team and life-time sports.
The prime objective of health education is to prepare an individual to function effectively and healthily within society. Therefore, health education concerns the total person, both actions and feelings.
